I scoured the discount floral section of my nearest JoAnn's and Michaels on a recent shopping circuit, collecting everything that looks reasonably small and cheap. Just stuffed a big ol' shopping bag full of it. Then chopped it up into smaller discreet pieces, picking out the miscasts.
I've got a few sheets of spare hardboard, so jigsawed a few different piles of shapes and drilled random holes in them. Sat down one night and tuned out to some music and just glued a crap top of plastic into said holes. Fill in the gaps with moss attached via PVA and it looks pretty decent.
Certainly fits my Heavy Gear Southern forces, even if they're technically based in a sort of alpine mix. The leafs are bigger than I'd like, but getting them really scale accurate is comparatively ruinously expensive, and besides it's an alien jungle, they can just be prehistoric style giant plants.
I've got enough to somewhat sparsely cover a 6x4 (1st following pic) or reasonably densely pack a 4x4 (2nd). I might do another batch of stands, I've got spare plant bits still. And I'm not happy with how dark and uniform my table fabric is. I want to try lightening it up with some sprayed bleached maybe. Or might just chop it up for 'forest area' that the jungle stands go on and use this much lighter but less uniform fabric I found.
